AELTCC Wimbledon - Balconies

As a site which is continually expanding and updating its facilities, we were pleased to be involved with this national institution. The balcony canopies were completed for the 2002 championships and provide shelter to the redeveloped balconies. A strict brief which required a replacement for the older canopies using new technology was accomplished with minimal steelwork and PTFE/glass mesh fabric, essentially as flat panels. The greatest challenge was the design of the brackets to support the 3.5m deep canopies. These wre fixed using post-drlled anchors attached to the existing 1930's concrete frame and which needed to accommodate the tolerances of the hidden rebar.

Two pairs of conical PTFE/glass canopies were required which transferred minimal loadings to the main building frame and take minimal support from the ground. In fact, each canopy has a single cable tiedown to the ground and a self-resolving frame for support. The tall masts were existing and are purely visual as their supporting frame below was already designed and installed.
